I was fed-up of tenting so I decided to design and build a small light weight caravan, equipped with only the basics, that can handle the rough gravel roads of SA and our neighbouring countries. I designed and built a small 2400mm long caravan with a double bed and a pull out kitchen and tested it on the worst road conditions in Namibia.
I also designed a 3000mm long caravan with a fixed kitchen at the back, with a choice of a microwave oven and fridge in the kitchen area. This model is the women’s favourite choice because of the kitchen.
I kept everything simple, stylish and neat to keep the cost as low as possible. The panels are of solid, waterproof and isolated board. The aluminium trimmings have been anodised to make it tougher and prevent it from oxidising (rust). The end result was a neatly built caravan with only the basics you need on a tour. No fancy extras that inflate the costs. No fold out parts. No step ladders to get into your bed. Only a double bed and a kitchen, enough space to stand and dress or undress, cupboards for your clothes and space for your porta potty. You simply step into your caravan, lift the roof and you are ready to go to sleep.
We camped in severe heat and the caravan was always cool inside because of the material I use.
